If we do not get to much rain,we will be right back in it by the weekend
Lots of well needed rain has fallen, about 2",this has made the housatonic a little off color and hard to wade, for the next couple of days, this is a good time to get your mothers day credit and stay home on sunday ,But be back first of the week ,March Browns and Gray Foxs are out in full force,as well as the caddis, also are starting to see PMD"s,sorry for the bad news ,I think Boat pepole will do all right this weekend,STREAMERS all the way
Great day of fishing for all that came uo on Sat,Caddis and March browns and gray fox, were all working on top, today should be the same,a perfect level to wade fish
dry fly fishing could not be any better, caddis starting around 10 AM going all day, green, brown, and tanned body caddis in size 18 to 14 will do the job, starting around 3 PM Gray Fox in March Brown's join the party sizes 16 through 12, a.m. streamer fishing is awesome brown and green woolly buggers as well as white and yellow muddler minnows are working well, for nymph fishing, prince nymphs size 14, Copper John's size 16, and caddis pupa are all working well, this is a great water level for wade fishing, this is the time to come and fish the Housatonic, and can be some of the best fishing of the year.
ViS: great
DEP put there spring fish in on Tuesday, some real nice one at that, water levels are great fish are rising to the Caddis Green 14 - 16 and tan 14-16 still no march browns or Gray fox mabe with the warn air at the end of the week
caddis action is picking up action pick up on top around 2pm till dark its time to fish
Took A walk last night along the river, around 7:30 PM, I saw a handful of fish rising to flies, caddis size 16 green body, but that was it, very cold up here today the wind blowing hard out of the North 20 to 35 miles an hour, probably not a good day to come up, however weekend should be nice,we need some warm air up here to get the caddis going, see you over the weekend
not much rain last night, but it is coming, today be here around noon, wind is starting to blow, should be great next week ,Caddis are here,We should be seeing Gray Fox,and March Browns right around the corner,i will keep you posted, look like rain maybe sliding east they have down graded total to less than 2"
tight lines
RAIN!!! here it come and we need it bad
Caddis they are here, the first couple of caddis had been reported,I say by next week, they should be out in full force, thank God there is a rain in forecast, maybe a couple of inches we sure do need should make for good fishing next week, the next mayflies will be the gray Fox and the march Brown, lets get ready to rumble.
Hendrickson are still outn there with some great Spinner Falls to come, warmer weather coming in for the weekend ,this should get them out of the trees, low water will give you great excess to the River, get out there ,not sure how long fishing will be good this year if the hot waather get in here,so get up here
Shop open
Hendrickson, are out in force, start aroundn 2pm the fish got them around 3pm and then they went NUTS,withn low
water and i mean low you must come now if you want to get in on some great dry fly action, any day we should have a big Spinner fall, this will bring up every fish in the river and i do mean the big one, great weather for the next week. tight lines
things have really picked up on the Housatonic over the weekend, fish are being caught up and down the river, on stone flies,Black, Brown, and small yellows,Prince nymph,, Copper John's, are all working, Streamer Fishing has picked up as well, Brown and Black Wooley Burger, as well as, black and gray ghosts. cold front has moved
in, thank God, temperature really getting up into the high 60s last week and we don't need that, no real rain in sight, we could use it, looks like Hendrickson's will be early this year,I will keep posted when the first one arrives on the shop wall.
Tight lines
Look like a early Spring for the Housy this year,Not much action yet, water is off color and running a little high, lots of warm weather coming this week ,no real rain in sight, fishing should be good for the begining of April.I will report again when there is soom new news to report.
Thight lines
Good fishing has arrived, FINALLY. Large streamers, and nymphs doing it. I expect the next 2 weeks to be REALLY GOOD here. The river has been stocked twice in the last 2 weeks, and there has been zero pressure till the last 3 days. Not a lot of insect activity to report, but doing well below the surface.
Fall colors are late here, as we are usually peak on Columbus weekend, but not this year. We are a week or 10 days from prime color , maybe longer with this heat of the last 2 day`s. Typical, unpredictable New England weather, got to luv it.. Now is the time to make tracks here.
TIGHTLINES !
10/8/11
Flow = 1700 cfs
water temp. = 56
We are dropping slowly here. The good news is that the river is chock FULL of fish. Yesterday some drift boats made the run , and despite the high water , caught a bunch of fish on streamers. No insect activity to speak of. We expect the fishing to really pick up as the water goes down. Try a sinking line in the meantime for great results.
A bit of sad news here yeaterday at the shop. Marty had to put down Fisher who has been a fixture here on the property since day 1. He will be sorely missed. Luv ya Fishy........ TIGHTLINES !
10/6/11
Flow = 2600 cfs
temp great
The River is slow to drop, we might have a chance to get in this weekend,I have a trip going out today I will report what happens in the Am
and falling,Some new rain forcasted for later in the week, however if no more rain come in we will have good fishing this weekend
water temp. = 62 deg.
the river need a feqw days to get back to fishing mode,by thursday i think
picked up an inch and a half of rain last night, River rising probably won't fish so well today, good news that looks like it will top off, under 3000 CFS, we could be fishing by next weekend providing no more substantial rain finds its way to the Housatonic Valley.stay home to your family stuff and get ready for the month of October, Fisher hungry and will be looking to eat , Ants, beetles, blue winged Olive,Iso:ssee you next week
Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
fishing picked up this weekend, with at least 10 rainbows that I know were caught, the River now is at 1200 CFS and should be in great shape for this weekend under 1000 CFS, DEP came by and Stock the River last Friday,so the River's in pretty good shape, with the new fish and all of the holdovers, from the spring which have not been molested in months,Ants,Iso's, on top, streamer fishing is very good,as well as stonefly's, Prince nymphs,Iso nymphs, and pheasant tails, two trips out today, will have Intel in the morning, dust off your rods, patch your waders and get ready to rumble, fall fishing is here
River conditions continue to improve, by Wednesday we should be able to wade River again, a few scattered showers for this week should not be a problem, I believe this weekend should be the first good weekend in months, Ants, beetles, Iso's, and streamer action will be the ticket, these fish have any in a while and will be looking to put the feed bag on. I have guide trips going out this weekend, and should have fresh Intel by Monday, tough year on the Housatonic, even tougher to be a shop owner on the Housatonic, let's hope for great October
Well......... another 6 + inches of rain here in the last 48 hrs. The river had gotten down to about 1500 on last Monday , after thhe big rains from Irene brought it to an all time high of 12,700 cfs. This am we went to 14,500 CFS ! It has crested now i believe, and should see some downward movement later today. As far as the fishing, forget about Trout Fishing in CT for the next few day`s at least as everything is " blown out " . What next ? Tightlines !

Flow = 1190 cfs
water temp. = 67 deg.
Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
Well we are getting back to normal after the epic rains and flooding from last weekend. Although the river went to 12,700, an all time high i believe, we are dropping very nicely. Current drop rates will allow fishing to resume as early as tomorrow if we get below 1500. It may beging to drop very slowly now, we will see.
Lots of Iso around , and the Nighthawks are out in full force eating them in the evening. So, we will be in good shape for the fall, which is here by the way. Summer is over, and the good fishing weather is now upon us. TIGHTLINES !
8/31 - 09- 05
Flow = 10,500 cfs down from 11,800 this will be 2 weeks be fore we can get back in the river
water temp. = 67 deg.
Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
10' of rain
So we had about 1 inch of rain Thursday evening which brought the river back up . Now we sit and wait to see what IRENE will do to us. With the ground saturated and with 5-10 inches of rain on the way, the outlook is NOT good for the short term. If we get that amount of rain this river will go sky high. The good news is that when the flow subsides, we will be in great fishing shape. That my be OCT. the way it`s lookin. A major Flying Ant blizzard yesterday. Tons of ISO in the evening also. Some fish up on them. SO batten down all the hatches and we will see ya on the other side of this.... TIGHTLINES !

Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
the River has crested at 1200 CFS, I would give it a day or two and then head out before Sunday's rain get up in here, the iso-action has been pretty good in the evening.
We got great news ! A good hatch of Iso brought the fish to the surface last night about an hour before dark. I clearly observed TROUT rising, and it appeared to be quite a few of them , and some smallies mixed in there also. I was not fishing , just watching, and did not see anyone out there fishing , so I dont knopw if any were caught. Regardless, with a moderation in the weather comming for this week , I expect the fishing to get better day after day over the next few weeks. A good soaking rain may clip us tonight also. So, between the cooler weather on the way , and the increased insect activity , we are on our way to a great FALL season here on the ol Housey ! Make plans to do some fishing here. TIGHTLINES !

Water temp. = 68 -70 deg.
Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
Well, we got another 2/10th of an inch of rain last night. Much more than that fell upstream as the river came up from 650 to 826 cfs. This water can only help us here as we attempt tp get back to normal fishing conditions after two Very slow months. So look for the trout to start getting more active over the next few weeks. Smallmouth fishing still holding its own. Try POPPERS for some real fun... Everything here is green and beautiful compared to last year when we looked like a desert here. We`ll take it. No one fishing yeaterday so I have no data to report. The river does look awfully good this am, and it could be worth giving it a shot. Ants and Beetles traditionaly work well at this time , ansd it wont be long for the big BWO hatch.

well Housatonic has come back to life, fresh life in the form of water has found its way to the Valley, trout have left the tributaries a week ago, this new flow 1360 cfs is allowing the fish to go back to their home waters.still some left over white flies, I'm seeing many Iso's on the fly shop that night, we will be fishing this size 12 mayfly into the first weeks of October make sure you have those in your boxes, around 1 September is terrestrial time, Beatles, black ants, flying ants, the water clarity is chocolate right now which should be cleared by the weekend, fish are hungry after their stay in the tributaries and will be looking to eat from top to bottom.I personally think the River fish as its best on foot in 800 to 1200 CFS we should be in this range by the weekend.
Some reports yesterday of smallies still rising to Whiteflies in the evening, however I expect that we have seen the last of the insect for the season. Smallmouth action still good. Try POPPERS for some real fun. Raining here and we have almost 3/10th of an inch so far with more on the way. We really need it. Water temp starting to retreat and all & all, not as bad as last summer.
So, it wont be long till the trout get active again. Once that water gets under 70, it will happen.

Ct fishing License Link = https://ct.outdoorcentral.net/InternetSales/LicenseSale.asp
well much-needed rain and relief are doing today for the Housatonic, with a much-needed cold front to follow, white fly came and gone not much there to eat them except for small mouth. Trout are still in the sanctuaries and will remain there until new water, and cooler temperatures find their way into the system,, nights are starting to get longer temperatures appear to be cooler for the next 10 days we should be on track for good trout fishing starting around 15 September.
A little more water here than we had last weekend, but we are still hurtin. We lost some fish last week due to the conditions. We really need a inch or two of rain or we still could be in trouble. Smallmouth fishing still good, poppers working well during the low water periods. No one has been on the water for a week so nothing really to report as far as actual reports.
Summer duldrums here for the time being.

much-needed water found its way to the Housatonic, added a few hundred CFS, we had some cool nights which also has helped drop the temperature into the high 70s, which is good for small mouth bass but not the trout, no sign of the white fly I will keep you posted, tight lines
HOT<HOT HOT!!
Water is to hot to fish for Trout, you will kill them during the fight,Very cool nights just around the corner,we could use some Rain.Small Mouth fishing is red hot right now, lots of fun on a fly rod.will update when trout fishing get better
Typical summer conditions here on the river. As the flow goes down the water temp rises, and we are in that cycle again. Overall the fishing has been fair to good the last few day`s. Nymphing and streamers still doing the most damage. A good Cahill hatch last night brought em up and we took several on the surface before dark. The Iso is very active also and dont forget Crayfish and terrestials this time of year. Be careful and take care in reviving any trout you catch, or they will go belly up.

The flow has come down to a nice level, but as it drop`s , the water temp. goes up. Fair to good reports came in over the last 48 hrs, mostly on nymphs. The Prince seems to be the ticket at the moment. Still an Alder here and there and Cahills in several sizes and their spinners. Some ISO around and some straggler caddis. Rain on the way for a little later, just in time .
We need a little to moderate the water temp. Have a great 4th !

The river is dropping nicely and should be in fine shape for the holiday weekend. I dont have much to report as few anglers have braved the high flow. The water temp. is still good and by this time last year we had all the trout heading into the summer refuge areas. So, it`s been a wet spring, a lot of high water conditions, but in between the rain`s we have had some spectacular fishing conditions. There is no doubt that the river is full of fish, and has an abundance of insect population on which to feed. The rest is up the the fish gods who at times smiles down upon us. Guide trips out on the river today so i will have first hand info for tomorrow`s report. Lot`s of Cahills and their spinner around last night.

Not much to report as there have been few anglers out the last few days. Lots of Alders again this am here at the shop. A good amount of Cahills & spinners around the lights last night.
Iso active also. The Alder should be on its last legs. This is better than the conditions of last late June, so we will take it and move into July with much more water and cooler water temps. than normal. That cant hurt. Should be a good weekend and if no more rain we will be down to 1000 -1200 cfs by SAt.

Yes, it`s been a tough spring, but it beats the hell out of last year when by this date we had begun to loose fish due to the heat. Tons of Cahill Spinners around in the evening, and the Alder still hanging around. A lot more Alders than last year. Iso and BWO active also. three quarters of an inch of new rain overnight, has to Housatonic at a perfect level for Wade fishing, looks like another batch of rain, due in a couple of hours,I think after that the River should fish great tonight, I drove around this morning the pools and runs, the perfect water clarity clear, alders. Cahills, stimulators,Iso's will get the job done on top, could be a great night for a spinner fall, there do
well the rivers at a beautiful level today, I floated the River last night pretty much was alders, from about four o'clock on, fish were up from push em ups to the park, stimulators worked great as well especially in the pocket water, Cahill showed up late about 8:30 PM. There is three days of rain forecasted we need it, better to have too much water then,to much warm of water.there's a weather alert today check your local radar before you drive up. The good news is fresh water in the river, this will raise the oxygen level in the water and fish will feed hard.
We got 1.2" of rain in total here, in heavy downpours and severe lightning at times. Still , the fishing held up in between the downpours. Alder on top during the day, some Cahills in the evening. Stonefly nymphs, Prince , and the Hellgramite in play. Several Dobson Fly here this morning. The river is up and off color, and as soon as it crests , i expect it to fish well again. TIGHTLINES !!

great fishing last night, alders, was the food of choice last night, just about everywhere we stopped fish were up and eating them, they should be a great weekend, I saw brown Drake last night for the first time, stonefly's working well underneath all day.
The river is up again, now to 1500 cfs. Apparently there was more rain upstream last night, we just got 1/10 ". So, she`s up, a little off color and cooler. This is a recharge of the system, as we really needed a change over to cooler water. We got it and this should carry us well into the last part of the month. If you recall last year at this time, we had just begun the downward spiral. Not this year is our new mantra. Maybe it will be another wet cool sunmmer ? The fish and fisherman would love that but i dont think those who farm for a living would .
NO ONE was out yesterday ? We did well the day before , but no one gave it a shot yesterday, so i have no idea as to what took place. I`m sure it was similiar to the usual performance.
We should be in FINE shape by the weekend.

Another 1/2 inch of rain here yesterday/last night. The river has dropped a little and is still a little off color. Our trips caught fish yesterday, but they had to work for them. Fish were rising all day to Alders along the banks and in foam lines. Nymphing with a Hellgramite or Large Golden Stone was working well too. Not as much evening surface activity as we have been seeing , however we did have a significant downpour in the late afternoon which knocked a lot of insects down. Cloudy-overcast and damop here this morning. Could be another decent day and as long as the water continues to go down , the fish should eat.. We really needed this water.

The river came up to 1400 and is a bit off color, but it has crested and is now going back down. Fish were caught yesterday on large bright streamers during the day. In the evening we found fish rising at 4pm when we put the boat in for a trip. Alders along the banks was the deal. A good hatch of multiple insects took place. Lots of spinners around the last 2 nights. A good amount of surface activity considering the less than perfect conditions. We got spoiled by the outstanding conditions of last week, but we really needed this new water. As long as we dont get hit again today with rain, it should be another fine day/evening,and even better on Sunday and going into the week.
TIGHTLINES !
6/10 =Another batch of severe weather passed over us yesterday afternoon/evening. We got another 1.2 inches of rain here. Actually with the rains of the last 2 day`s we averted disaster. The river was getting way too low and warm for early June. I was begininning to worry that a repeat of last year was starting. But just in time a new slug of water will prolong our June fishing. Great Barrington seems to have crested this morning and we should rise a little more before it levels off here. A little off color , but not bad compared to what happens after 2 + inches of rain in April or May when that causes us to really "muddy up ".
This fishing has been holding up with great surface activity in the evening, and some action during the day on Alder`s. All and all we are in good shape for the weekend. If not for the rains, i may have been writing the river`s obitutary this morning... Cahill- Blk. Caddis-Alder-BWO-Stoneflies-ISO are all doing it. Nymphing still killin em ! SAhe has been really good the last week. Really, the whole season has been last week as we lost all April and most of May to the high water. So it does not really get any better than it has been and if you wait too long to come up you may in fact miss the action. TIGHTLINES !

much needed rain has found its way to the Housatonic River last night to very strong systems, first came through it 9 pm, the second came through around 2 AM, results were 1 inch of new rainfall in the River coming up 200 CFS which we need, also dropped the temperature of the River by 4°, we are forecasted this afternoon for the same thing again, currently we are under cloudy skies which will help keep River temperatures down today, in addition the next 10 days we will be a cooling trend with overcast skies scattered rains and low temps. Fishing continues to be great early morning and from seven o'clock to dark, Alder flies, Cahill's, stimulator, iso,s, Black Caddis, are the food of choice. With cooler temperatures fishing will start earlier in the afternoon this weekend should be awesome, come on out
Well another bright sunny, breezy day here yesterday. A little tough during the day , but nymphs fished deep worked. Still, nothing really rising during the day. I floated last evening putting in at Cellar at about 5:30. The river is VERY clear. Our boat caught fish on nymphs in severasl spots as we headed to Sand Hole to stake out. A large Golden Stone and a Tung Head Prince was all you needed. A few fish up here and there on the way down. At about 7:30 the bugs really got going. Everything you can see here was seen there last night. Again , for me the Parachute or Comparadun Cahill #12 did it. At least thats a sucker i can see... They have seen the insect several days now and seem to prefer the lower floating flies i mentioned over a fully hackled one. Also, the first time i have really seen a spinner flight / fall was last night. Lot`s of Large Stenonema comming back to the water. Looked like some March Browns - Grey Fox- Cahill all in the larger sizes. The rise forms were indiciative of spinner feeding , as they were barely sipping , but still very present. Lots of hatching Sulpher and small, BWO and spinners for both at dark. And of course , little Black Caddis. The fish love them, but tough to see at the end of your leader at 9pm. Good numbers of hatching Stones from about a size #4 down to the little guy`s which there were tons of. Over all, in my opinion, the best night of the year so far. Tonight will be a repeat. We are at 600 cfs. This is when the real action happens. YOUR WINDOW IS VERY SMALL AND CLOSING. TIGHTLINES !

Great afternoon dry fly fishing, whats on the water ,everything, last night guide trip I saw good amounts of Iso's, stonefly's, Cahill's,PMD's, black Caddis, and yes Alders, many many many Alders, from about 7:45 PM fish started to rise, first on the shaded banks of the Westside, and moved across the stream as the sun began to set, stimulators fish in the pocket water, produced Violent Hits, golden stones poured off from about 430 to dark, Cahill's began around seven o'clock Cahill parachutes in size 14-16 very effective, then around 730 quarter of 8 PM D's, and size 18 and 16 began to show up, at the same time Black Caddis were crawling up my waders, fishing a Cahill trailing a black caddis to be very effective, but my guess with water levels dropping under 700 CFS the fish today begin to start feeding on the Alder, look for feeding fish under low hanging branches over the River, the Alders like to gather their.Sunday should be the best day with even lower water levels in cloudy skies this should have fish rising throughout the River system, tight lines and good hunting
What a change in the weather the last 24 hours. We went from winter straight into summer a few weeks ago, and now an artic clipper has brought us the weather we expect for early June. Cool days and cooler nights. Almost fall-like it was so cold last night, actually broke the polar fleece back out. The storms of 2 days ago which brought Tornado`s just to our north, left some water upstream in the system. Great Barrington had a small spike upwards, nothing major. The clarity is fine at the moment.
The water temp. had dropped a few degrees overnight , and should do the same tonight as the cool temps arwe here for a few days. That should really get em active. A cool breezy morning here, with the most insects flying around that i have seen at this time of day , this year. Quite a few caddis buzzing around. Good numbers of Grey Fox and size #16-18 Bwo spinners in the spider webs . A few Alders have been spotted. The nymphing with Stonflies-small PT and Prince still doing it. Lots of hatching stones , so dont be afraid to fish the Stimulator, but do it blind , in pocket water. Dont throw that large fly at rising fish, you will only scare them away. Blind, behind rocks and in eddy`s is the way to play that game. It will produce !!
March Browns - several caddis including the small black- Cahill - BWo - Brown Drake - ISO - Sulpher`s - are what`s going on in the evening. Shmorgasboartd time as the old timers used to call it. I must say that this is shaping up to be the best fishing conditions we have seen on a weekend all season. NOW IS THE TIME !! TIGHTLINES !!

Golden stone flies are popping up all through the pocket water, yellows and orange stimulator are a good choice, Cahill's in 12,14 and 16 from eight o'clock on,were great last night,March Browns and gray foxes are still on the water and continue to take fish. A major break in the weather after a storm front comes through this morning will begin to reduce water temperatures. Scattered showers are forecast for the next couple of days, believe it or not we could use the rain
Good Memorial Day to you all. Got moved out of bed at 5:30 am by 2 loud cracks of thunder as loud as i have ever heard. Then came the rain . About 1 1/2" so far and still comming down. The river may rise as a result. One of our guides was out there this am before the rains and had rising fish, but the rain put them down as it came in buckets. Yesterday was another fair nymphing day, with a fish rising here and there. I floated putting in at Cellar Hole at 5:30. Took a few small ones on a black Matuka size 12, my partner took a couple on Prince and stonefly nymphs and at about 8 pm all hell broke loose. Bugs, Bugs, Bugs ! The best hatch so far this year. Where do i start ? Iso - March Brown - Grey Fox - Stones - Bwo - Caddis - and the fly du jour`, the Cahill. Lots of Cahills from a 16 to a 12. I took fish on a #12 Cashill Parachute, and tried no other dry fly as it appeared that they were on the white bug. It was fast and furious and they rose right till dark at about 9 pm. She really came alive last night , just as i was beginning to wonder about what was going on here ? Yeah, nymphing has been good, but most want to dry fly fish and up till last night we had none of that happening. Today is a new day , let`s see what happens. If the water does not come up too much they should repeat last nights preformance.

A fair day here on the river yesterday. Bright sunny conditions have been the deal the last 3 day`s. Nothing at all on top despite the hatches . Nymphing was a little off and you really had to work for em. Dont really understand why they are not looking up, yet. The fish are there , in good numbers, but seem content to only eat below the surface ?? I expected it to break open this weekend, and it`s not over yet, so we keep our fingers crossed that they will start looking up before long. Very weird to not have fish rising by Memorial Day, but that is the condition we have, so we work with it. I will make an offering to the fish gods today in hope of changing things for the better. Overcast conditions here at the moment and it really looks like good fishing to me when we have the cloud cover. Let`s see what happens today . TIGHTLINES !

We had a bright sunny , warm day here yesterday, and again nothing rising during the day, but the nymph fishing held up fine. I did get some reports of surface activity in the evening prior to dark, but that was second hand info. Cloudy and overcast here this am, and much cooler. This is my kind of day. I will take this over the sun anytime. Should be a busy day up here, and i will get a lot more in the way of fishing reports than during the week when hardly anyone was up here. The Holiday weekend has begun with a fine morning here on the river. A lot of severe weather to or west last night , but nothing here. She is way down to a fishable level for all at 1220 cfs. Some rising fish were seen early in the day yesterday but then nothing on top the rest of the afternoon. Lots of insects though. Caddis - March Brown -Grey Fox- Stoneflies- Bwo - Light Cahill also. Good numbers of insects, some spinners also. The fish are really eating the nymphs but are yet to really develop a pattern on top. Nymph fishing has been off the hook. Streamers working too. The fish should begin to look up any time now that the water has gotten back to normal levels. Good weather on tap, lowering water levels and an abundance of insects all add up to be in our favor for a great weekend. It`s time to get up here. TIGHTLINES !!

The river is dropping and with no rain in sight it is bound to be a spectacular weekend here. Still nothing rising ! An abundance of insect activity yesterday and last night. The most insects i have seen so far. If only the fish start lookin up ? Nymphing still the best choice. Large, and i mean " go big or go home " large , black stonefly nymph (hellgramite) will bring fish to the net . Dont be afraid of the big stuff. Golden stone also a prime choice. Prince , caddis larvae, Hare`s Ear, P.T., all will work too... Lots of caddis , some March Brown , increasing numbers of the Grey Fox too. By the way the grey Fox is the large yellow mayfly you will see out there, it is NOT grey at all. Why do they call it a " Grey Fox" then ? Hummmm ? I talked to a few who were out yesterday, all had success nymphing, but never saw anything on top. So adjust to the conditions, get your nymph down and you will catch fish. Once the flow gets down a little more , they should start looking up ! . Smallmouth action also picking up. A lot of hatches are due to start in the next 2 weeks and we are in for a real good time here, what the old timers once called smorgasboard time. Marty floating this afternoon so we will report first hand data tomorrow. Come on up to the ol Housey , soon !

We had some Hellgramite larvae here in the parking lot yesterday morning after the rain , so I decided to throw a 4 inch long # 4 stonefly nymph last night , and did VERY well in only 1 hr. of fishing. Big flies bring BIG fish ! Lots of caddis around. March Browns and Grey Fox here and there and they should really kick in over the next couple of day`s with the warmth finally here. A Big drop in flow over the last 24 hrs. One of the biggest i have ever seen. The vegetation is apparently really sucking it up, as the sun certainly is not evaporating it ! If we keep up a fair pace in the drop, and dont get any more measurable rain, we could be in REAL GOOD shape for the holiday weekend. There is a chance of rain in the forecast for the next few day`s , what else is new ? We will see and as spring in New England goes, anything can happen. It`s cool , damp and overcast here at the moment, nippy actually, but supposed to be over 80 tomorrow , and staying warm for a few days ? Really ? Here ? I will believe when i see it. If it does warm up , and and as the water drops, we are gonna have an explosion of activity. This could happen in the next few day`s and by the weekend, if Jupiter aligns with Mars, if you know what i mean . Keep your fingers crossed, but it will happen sooner or later.

fishing couldn't be any better, from about 12 o'clock on yesterday fish were rising to green body caddis, if you like to fish dries this is the time to come see below for fly listings, fishing couldn't be any better than it is right now. Elk Hair Caddis - X caddis - Caddis Emerger. MArch Brown & Grey Fox. Nymphs , Nymphs, Nymphs.... It`s hoppion & poppin now folk`s
The flow has gotten down to a very wadable level. Yersterday was kinda weird. I spoke to some who had no luck at all, and others who killed it. What is strange is the all seem to be using the same flies. So, the moral is , PROPER PRESENTATION, is the key. I am of the mind set as far as nymphing goes, that presentation is MORE important than fly selection. Having said that , it looks like a great day again here. Very cloudy and overcast , my favorite conditions.
Marty`s sport took fish on top yeaterday on caddis. Elk Hair - X-Caddis - and Lafontain Emerger.
The first real reports of surface activity i have heard. Only a few fish came up the entire day and our hope is that each day they will come a little more to the top and in the next few day`s we should really be rollin.... The micro Golden Stone nymph in #12 -14 is deadly ! As well as the Prince and Hares Ear. The Troutmaster nymph is a 16-18 is a good trailer off any larger nymph if you go that way. We continue to have great streamer and nymph fishing. The caddis is around more and more each day and at 1000 cfs, the fish gotta start lookin up real soon. Large stonefly nymphs with a caddis larvae or pupae trailer about 8-10 inches behind will do it. Hare`s Ear - Pheasant Tail - and Prince nymphs all working well too. White wolly bugger - white & green zuddler types - and black & brown wolly bugger all working. Dont fish em too fast now. I hooked a monster rainbow accross the street last night, had em on over 10 minutes before he decide he wanted to keep my fly. I will try to get that fly back tonight. That was the first holdover fish I myself had hooked. Nice to know there are some that made it through last summer. Everything is setting up to be a spectacular weekend here. Dont let any forecast of rain scare you away. It is only a slight chance, and I feel that a little cloud cover or a passing shower , cant hurt. Still nothing on the surface, but the caddis are cranking up and i think these fish will start eating dry`s before the weekend, if not TODAY ! I nymphed accross the street early this morning and did well with a small golden stonefly nymph. The flow is very nice, we have great water clarity, and when we get a few more insects bouncing around on top , they will be sure to start eating . Streamers againg along with nymphs are the sure bet for the moment. Green Caddis- March Browns- Grey Fox all will be in play in the next week. For now keep nymphing and throwing those streamers. If we hear of rising fish will will report. It will be a great weekend here to fish , NO DOUBT. So if you have been waiting for good water levels, now is the time.

The State DEP has made a significance presence on the river this spring so make sure your legal or it could be an expensive day for you.
I floated from Push em Up to the Park yesterday , putting in at noon and finishing at about 5pm. First and foremost is that i and the other guides i saw out there, saw NO rising fish. I saw increasing numbers of Caddis, still some Hendricksons, a few March Browns, but nothing up on them. I tried my hand at streamer fishing
( not my forte` either ) and had seven strikes on a BH white wolly bugger, on about 10 casts, and failed to hook one. Not being a glutton for punishment i decided to rig a golden micro stone #12, with 2 small split shot . I began to nymph in the faster moving water and took fish after fish. Mostly cookie cutter & FAT 12-14 inch rainbows, courtesy of the State of CT DEP. I did catch a couple of Browns also. They were a little longer, but for me none of them appeared to be in the " holdover " category. Not to say they are NOT there , they are. Cant say enough about yesterday`s fishing ! It wasnt pretty but a lot of fish were caught , all " BELOW " the surface. A little shower later today, maybe ? and No other rain for the next few day`s is getting us very excited about the possibilities of awsome fishing this week and upcomming weekend. well the River is beginning to fall slowly, streamer fishing, and nymph fishing continued to be good, with warmer weather coming in watch for spinner flights in the evening, fish inside bends, and along the edges where there are rocks, the fish will be tucked in next to them. Still Hendrickson duns in the afternoon started around two o'clock. Light rain forecast for the weekend, shouldn't be a big deal. Tight lines
well dry fly fishing has definitely begun, the last two nights good numbers of fish rising to Hendrickson's Duns, Hendrickson emergers, and after seven the Henderson spinners. Streamer fishing continues to get better every day, with River temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s on sunny days, has put the fishes metabolisms in high gear. We are having rain as we speak, started around 4 AM ,light to moderate so far as of 11 o'clock just about a 10th of an inch, rain is supposed to pull out between one and three today, I don't think this will have any effect on the River, we should be fishing around 1000 to 1200 CFS by the weekend.
well this could be the weekend we've all been waiting for that keep our fingers crossed, and hope for no rain, streamer fishing continues to be the mainstay for now black brown and green woolly buggers will do the trick we need to lose another 500 CFS and will be in good shape for the weekend

Well , another nice looking morning here. The river dropped around 400 cfs yesterday . During the day those who braved the substantial amount of water were able to catch a fish here and there, but NOT gangbusters by any stretch . Still NOT a LOT of Hendricksons ! It was chilly and windy all day Sat. and that contributed to the lack of visible insects. So we watch and wait . As it drops i look for the hatch to intensify, but realistically , there is a chance of rain the next 3-4 day`s. It all depends on Mother Nature now folks. Remember , this is what we all wanted when we pushed for "Natural Flow "

while the rain is on our doorstep, it caused massive devastation in Alabama and surrounding states and is doing here this afternoon, is a slight chance it could break up let's hope for that, beautiful weekend forecasted watch for tomorrow morning's report.
well let's hold our breath, the Midwest is getting pummeled with rain which is heading in our direction for Thursday afternoon, let's hope it misses us. Had boats out yesterday fishing was slow a couple of fish caught all day,the good news is state put in very large fish, and they stock heavy,I saw at least four trucks here. Still no spinner or falls,we'll talk again after the rain. Tightlines
Midday news flash 1:02 pm state just arrived and stock the River today, with 10,500 browns between 12 and 16 inches, it will take a couple of days before the fish get active.
The River looks like it's starting to fall nicely, water temperatures are in the low 50s, with the warm weather this week temperatures should go above 55°. Trouts metabolism kicks into gear between the temperatures of 55° and 65° what that means, fish have two eat, Hendrickson's are almost a week old now,and are kicking into high gear, we could see Spinner Falls by Saturday night. We do have a few bullets to dodge this week, Wednesday night rain 50% chance, Thursday evening rain looks like there's a few good cells involved hopefully will miss us. If we dodge the bullets this weekend it should be awesome. Water levels should be around 1000 CFS which I think is the perfect flow for the Housatonic wade Fishermen. If you're looking this weekend of fish some dry flies, try to fish along the edges where you see foam lines along rocks,no more than 2 feet of water,I would start around 2 PM and fish it to dark,I also like to try to do this with two flies, Hendrickson dry up front and trailing a Hendrickson emerger, about 8 to 10 inches behind. Good luck and tight lines
The river is up from yesterday and off color. Keep your fingers crossed for the weekend as it could really break open by then as the water drops. If we dodge any more significant rain this week , we should be in fine shape for the end of the week and weekend. There should be some returning spinners by then. Within the next few weeks everything will break loose. Looks like the rain will hold off for Saturday opening day fishing, I don't know about Sunday, looks like a few large cells will be coming through Saturday night. Still no sign of the Hendrickson's, I expect to see them this week coming, Streamer fishing along the edges should be productive, however we are running high with water at 2030 CFS today hopefully 1800 tomorrow, still high for Wade fishing, you can work the edges in a few locations. For nymph fishing Hendrickson's Hair Ears,Prince nymph all in size 12 and 14 is your best bet, remember to come with your fishing license ,we do no longer sell them here at the shop, they can be purchased online and printedokay I'm off your home printer, you'll find the link here on the River report just copy and paste it into your browser pay by credit card and print it. Tight lines good luck
We received less than an inch of Rain, the River now is at 2300 CFS we were at 1900 CFS before the rains. I expect to see the first of the Hendrickson's this week, yesterday I flipped some rocks along the edges and saw a few Hendrickson nymphs. The water slightly off-color, when it starts remember yellow and white streamers are great hi watercolor. Rain forecasted Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, not supposed to be too heavy.water temperatures have climbed to the upper 40s, 50° is the magic number that will get the Hendrickson's going, s
Spinner flights generally starts 7 to 10 days after the insect hatch. Remember to try when you dry fly fishing to tie a Hendrickson nymphs 8 to 10 inches off the back of your dry, very effective. Tight lines have a great opening day and "Cross some Eyes"
A very warm day has been forcasted , maybe 80 ? That will warm it up ! . We will keep an eye on it and report accordingly. A few anglers out over the weekend , but with this flow not much doin. We will keep ya posted. It wont be long now. Tightlines !

Well the water temp has come up 7 degrees since last weekend. All the snow that was hanging around is gone. 75-80 degrees for Monday should get the river up to 50 deg.
2-3 days of 50 deg. water temps and we will have the Quill Gordon & Hendrickson. It wont be long now . We are open and stocked up with all the " stuff " needed to have a good day of fishing on the river. Stop by when you are up . We are booking a lot of Guide Trips for May & June so if you are thinking of doing a trip then, reserve asap, as we are filling the schedule quickly. Hey everyone. What a freakin winter. Still got snow banks on the property several feet high. We had near record high water a few weeks ago, with some major flooding downstream in New Milford with significant property damage. Cold and windy here today , but sunny. A few hard core anglers taking a look and giving it a shot but no real reports of action, YET ! It wont be long and we are now open and getting ready for what we hope will be a rebound season after the dismal summer past. No water, high temperatures, little fishing action was the norm from about the 3rd week of June till almost end of Sept. We lost a lot of the fish due to these conditions but the state came back in the fall and loaded her back up. Another healthy stocking here in the next few weeks will put us back to where we were, and with a little luck we hope for a grand season.
So, in case you did not hear the Didimo algae has been detected on the Farmington, and we have to be vigilant to try to keep it from here, but it will be difficult as so many anglers fish both rivers. We cant catch a break, one thing after another here. So stop by and say hello. I will be here every weekend until Nov.1 giving you the skinny as to what is going on. Marty of course will be around during the week to handel all else. Look foreward to seeing all of you real soon. Tightlines~ MOE & Marty

Well, as far as the fishing goes, it has proved to be hard work the last few weeks. Streamers and nymphs , low and slow, will do it. Also, egg patterns fished on the bottom have been gettin em. Another season in the books, and what a long strange trip it`s been. A wonderful spring, and early summer , full of promise , then she dried up with a flow at times under 100 cfs . So, we put it to bed for another 6 months and will wake it back up in April 2011. Hope you all have a wonderful Holiday season, and we will see you again next year. Tightlines. Moe & MArty

The fall fishing has arrived . Lower water levels and temps. has caused the fishing to pick up. Not much in the way of surface activity but good streamer and nymph fishing. Generic streamers, bright colors are working . Egg patterns have also proved to be a winner. Low and slow this time of year. Ton`s of fish in the river, not too many leaves in the water yet, so it is a great time to be here. Come on up. Tightlines !!!

The river peaked at 1650 and is now falling , currently at 1580 cfs. The clarity is about 3 feet. A glorious day here on the Housey ! Some fish were caught yesterday but you had to work hard for them. I expect the water to drop very nicely over the next few day`s and good fishing is in the forecast. It is a great time to come up here over the next 2 weeks , as the fall colors are at peak, and the fishing should really peak when this water gets back to the 1000 level or under. Well, another inch of rain here has brought her back up and we now are at 145o and rising. The color is not as bad as it was two weeks ago when we got 6 inches. The streamer fishing was good all week. They were after bright colored stuff. The fall colors are peaking now and it wont be long before the leaves fall into the water which makes fishing tough. RAIN<RAIN MAYBE We NEED IT
The state put more fish in this week as did HRO and we are now in fine shape again. It`s great to be able to report good news after the dooms - day summer which is now in our rear view mirror. Now, if we can only get a little rain. I will make an offering to the god`s . The streamer fishing to the " new " fish has proved to be the most fun the last week. Just about anything stripped will do it. Last night i watched fish boil like there was no tomorrow. The were on ISO - October Caddis - and some BWO. Spinners were also working. It seemed like every fish in the river was up. Been a long time since I have seen that here. So, we are back, the bite is on. Fall is here and the river is fishing great . It is historically low however, a good time to explore the contours of the bottom for future reference. Marty in Idaho on the South Fork and Henry`s Fork.

The state came in and loaded her back up this week. They are also comming back at least once more in the next week or so. The river is full of fish again , and they are eating. We have had some good action in the last few day`s mostly on streamers and some ants, caddis and ISO . So , even though it is very low in flow, the water has cooled enough to get them interested in eating. A good number of 16-20 " fish have been introduced. A little rain on Sunday and Monday could do wonders for us as we still need water ! The fall has arrived on the Housatonic and it`s time to come up and give it a shot . TIGHTLINES !

Well , we go NO WATER ! The water temp has come down a little as we have had some cool nights , and we expect this to continue. What we really need is a good soaker. The fall colors wont be too good here if we dont get some water. The fishing is basically at a standstill at the moment , not much of anything going on , but good insect activity the last few nights, mostly the ISO. The state was planning on stocking this week but with the warm and low conditions we dont know if that will take place. There is no real rain in the forecast and to us it does not make much sense dumping several thousand fish into " STRESS " conditions, that wont help anything ! We will keep an eye on this and report accordingly. Happy Labor Day. Tightlines !

Remember that we no longer sell Fishing Licenses at the shop. we have Rain . Yes , I said RAIN, it`s true... A substantial system moved in last night and we could get a few inches. We were a week away from turning in to the Sahara desert here. This should bring everything back, except the fish that were lost in the last 2 months. The State should come in sometime in the next 30 day`s or so and fill us back up with fish, and we expect a normal Fall season. This rain will bring the water temp down and the fish that are still stacked up at the tribs should move back into the river. This is what we have been waiting for. The river is historically low, and warm. Last year we had 1000-1500 cfs for most of July. I would kill right for a portion of that. The Whitefly is out and has been moderate to strong the last 2 nights. Mostly Bass on them, on the surface. Rain in the forecast the next few day`s , we need a good soakin. Keep your fingers crossed. If you like Smallmouth we are the place to come. When the water cool`s we will be back at the trout.
Well, another round of heavy rain here late last night. A spectacular lightning show . Around an inch fell and for the first time in a month or so everything is well watered and looking green again. It appears that there was more rain upstream as Great Barrington is at 247 cfs and rising , which should put us to around 500 cfs here later today , ( We HOPE ! ) That is good news for our Trout who continue to endure extreme stress conditions, and remained pooled up in the refuge areas. Leave them alone, dont go looking at them as it only adds to the stress. We are still asking you not to come here to trout fish until further notice. The smallmouth action remains constant as one would expect in these conditions. A very warm day predicted , in the mid 90`s, with a 50% chance of more severe weather later. Feast or Famine. Some good news here. We got the first measurable rain in quite a while yesterday afternoon, 1 3/4 inch fell in about an hour. It really came down. The ground was so dry however that most of the water soaked into the ground and very little made it into the river. It did bring the tribs up to more than a trickle. We are still in significant trouble here as far as the trout go. Do not come here looking for trout until further notice ! We have lost some of these magnificant creatures over the last 2 weeks. We got about 1/4 " of rain yesterday. The major storms passed us by. We really needed it. A little overcast this am , as usual here in the valley, but it will burn off as it will go to 86 deg. today. Same fly`s as the last few day`s. Nymphing still the main attraction. the water has clear up and the fishing is good to great right now, we did not get much rain over night, water levels are perfect and will be all weekend long, last night I went up and look at the Cover bridge pool it was nice to see fish working in the pool again they were out in the center just sipping spinners around 7:30 pm.
I took a look around last night at 900cfs and at 7pm, found fish up all over the place, the water was off color but the fish were coming up anyway went big with the bugs and tried a stimulator ( yellow ) first shot a 15" brown hit it hard, I then turn the rod over to my boy Dom and on his 2nd cast hit a nice rainbow we had fun with that for 3 more fish and then went to a size 10 ISO they killed it for 4 more fish and just before dark went to a 10 white wolf picked up 2 more should be better tonight with the lower flow, watch the sky to night some storm in the valley tonight...800

We have lost most of the clarity and are about 1.5 ft. visibility Bright colored streamers ( yellow & white ) are what I like when the conditions are like this. Low and slow as they say. BIG nymphs also, like the stone or Hellgramite.

Very overcast here this am, and rain comming in according to the radar. Maybe a 1/2 to and inch over the next 24 hrs. We could use it again to stabilize conditions here for another week or so. Good nymphing again yesterday. Last night there was GREAT surface activity. I watched the water from 7-9pm upstream, and was very impressed at what I saw. Lots of noses sticking out. A good amount of 2" Golden Stones flying around. Good Alder activity, Cahills, and most importantly Iso BiColor. Tons of them , and the fish were on them. Also a fair amout of Little Yellow Sallies, and other stones. Black caddis hot too, just stand in the fast water and they will crawl down your legs and lay their eggs on your waders. Heavy storms rolled through yesterday afternoon, including the springs second tornado warning. Some trees down up in Sharon and a woman riding a horse in Goshen was struck by lightning. Just under 1/2 inch of water fell here. The river is better than it was last week at this time. The water temp. is the most significant change , down to 62 this am. I did get daytime reports last weekend of water temps around or over 75 deg. ( NO GOOD !) So all in all we are in good shape here. Cool evening temps have helped moderate things. Isonychia seems to be the main event the last few days. Sporadic hatching all day then a dump of them in the evening. The spinner will always take fish when presented properly. Lots of Alder still , several types and colors of caddis. Sulpher - Cahills - Bwo - all around. Stonefly nymphs are on fire , and now that the water is cooler they shoukld go back to chasing streamers. Come on UP !

Good nymphing again yesterday, and last night was some good dry fly action , mostly from 8-9 pm. Cahill - Iso and their spinners worked as did caddis and skeetering an Alder. Stoneflys really active. Some action yesterday . Decent activity first thing in the morning, then we had bright sun all day. The water heated up and nymphing was the only way to get one. In the evening , again, a blizzard of various insects, you name it , they were around. Caddis still the heaviest of all , including the Alder which is in full swing. More and more Iso each day, and spinners in the evening. Cooler evening temps for Sunday - Monday- Tuesday could help us.

Well , another week is in the books. A sparkeling day here. Blue sky and dry. Good weather today . Maybe a little rain tonight and over the weekend . We really need it as we are behind for the year so far. All the bugs are out and the fish are eating them mostly in the early am and and just before dark. With the clouds and rain on Sat. and Sun. there could be good action all day with the abundance of insects that are out. This weather comming is perfect for fishing and beats the bright sunshine of the last few weeks. I would make a b line up here if I was you. looks like a soaking is on the way tonight and tomorrow. We really need it. The river temp continues to get up into the mid to upper 60`s by the middle of the afternoon. Not seeing any fish moveing into the tribs yet, so they are holding their own for now. Yesterday was a fair day, mostly nymphers having the best luck. Last night was a deluge of insects. The ALDER made its apperance and it wont be long before the trout realize that and get on em. Ton`s of brown caddis, they look like a baby alder in color and are about 1/2 the size. Thousands of them under our lights last night as we enjoyed a seafood medely on the grill. By far the most prevelent insect at the moment. Some Cahill spinners under the lights, Iso spinners, several types of stones, ( golden stone nymph killin them ) Dobson Fly is active but wait till it rain`s then you will really see em. Sulphers here and there, some Drakes and a lot midges also. Last night Marty`s brother Matty and his son hit 2 car till dak and knocked em around pretty good. Memorial Day weekend is upon us,backyard barbecues, and trout fishing, that's how I grew up, with that said, fishing is excellent early morning and late afternoon into the evening, last night driving home from dinner I had to use the windshield wipers were so many spinners coming down the road was a mix of PMD's March Browns and yes even the green drake and brown Drakes are out,it is soup time out on the River observation is the key to success at this time in the season with so many different bugs on the water, what one fish eats the next fish may not be eating, Golden stone flies are coming off to big numbers, stimulators are working great in the pocket water,Iso's,and sulfurs are working great and runs, Green Drake, and Brown Drake are working well in the pools Cahill are working great throughout the River system, at any time in the evening any of their spinners could be on the water, with low water levels you can walk all over the River and access parts that normally you can never get to.we need rain, but the weather gods have brought us cool temperatures again, have a great Memorial Day weekend lets not forget why we celebrate this day, let's be safe out there tight lines. This will be the report for the weekend
A cloudy overcast morning here. These are the day`s I dream about when it comes to fishin the ol Hous. With no sun and lots of bugs and low water, there is nothing more that one could ask for. So, why are you not here ???? People, you are missing the boat if you do not get up here in the next week or two. Really , this river has not been in better shape in recent memory. Gotta give the state of CT a lot of credit for comming around and revising their management policy. We have what we wanted and asked for. The bugs du jour` are the size #16-18 Sulpher. A #12-14 Cream Cahill. A # 12-14 March Brown. Some large Iso here and there, as well as several colors and sizes of Caddis. The Stonefly is very active, and just look at any large rock near fast water and you will see the shucks....Golden Stonefly nymphs killing them... Dont rule out spinners, as the March Brown could fall en mass any evening now that they have been out for a while. Nymphing still is the ticket to catch the most and the biggest fish. Think about prospecting pocket water with a Stimulator when nothing else going on. Shmorgasboard time on the Housey.

One of the top 10 weekends for fishing is upon us, with water Temps at a optimum temperature , fish half to eat and eating they are, morning activity starts around seven with brown and green caddis making for much of the action, from about 11 o'clock to three o'clock fishing in the pocket water with a size 10 March Brown can bring fish to net, from three o'clock to dark there is a plethora of insects on the water starting with the sulfur size 14 March Brown size 12 and 10 gray Fox size 14 and even stimulators are starting to work in the pocket water for the Golden stone flies, there is no shortage of activity out there you just need to move around and find it. Spinner falls have begun around 730 at night a good supply of Rusty spinners in range from 18 to 10 will get the job done.
Last night fishing was great, Sulphers were out in numbers, this ia a great hatch for fishing Dries,it start around 4pm and goes to dark,in a few days we should the Spinner falls starting, get ready.March browns are hot right now,as well as the Gray fox, with good weather for the next week, fishing will only get better,at 750 cfs this is great wading level, you can get all over the river,it wont be long before the Green Drake and brown drake will be here, then the Alder.
Not a bad day on Sunday, fish were on the brown Caddis 8am -11am . The the March Browns made an appearance around 4pm till dark, and the fish went for them on the surface. Dont be afraid to throw a big fly at them , size # 10-12 for starters. We should see some March Brown spinners any evening now, so if you see them in the air, and then see sippers , try that spinner. Getting to the stage in the game in the next week or so where a lot of insect activity will be happening. The Stonefly nymph is very active and working well. Grey Fox- Sulpher - Cahill- Drakes , soon to be served at the Hous buffet table. So keep an eye on the menu. Tightlines ! Today

friday was a hot day of fishing,Caddis were on the water all day, from push em ups to the park ,Prince nymph were hot as well, some much need water has the river at a nice flow of 900cfs and is starting to fall. More rain is due in for Tues, wed of this week, come on out ,weather is going to be nice all weekend tight lines
picked up a 1/2 inch of rain last night, not sure what happen up north,I floated last night from celler Hole to the park, they were fish up but not a lot of bugs, not sure why,March Brown emerger work good for me ,as well as the Gray fox Dry.Streamer fishing was great, landed 3 nice Rainbows, over 15" but went back to the dries, there were fish eating Caddis and BWO.Grat day to come out and fish,A little weather coming in for the afternoon watch the skies.-
.+
The wind and the rain have finally retreat from the Housatoni.A well needed half inch of rain, has put the River at comfortable 700 CFS, action has been wonderful, Bluewing Olive ( BWO ) sizes 18 through 20 have been on the water on cloudy and rainy days, the Grey Fox and the Caddis have ruled the surface, the Grey Fox 14 and 16 will do the job nicely, Henryvilles, Brown caddis, X caddis in 14 and 16 are working well. From this point on fishing March Browns from 4 clock to dark, trailing a Gray fox cripple,is deadly. Stoneflies in Black, Brown and Yellow are also effective, try trailing a caddis Pupa or A Hare's Ear size 14.Prince nymphs size 16 to 12 also working well,Olive Woolybugger, as well as Brown are taking fish, Rusty spinners 20 through 10 should be in your fly boxes now until August,a good pattern to trail off of March Browns, Brown Drakes, Green Drakes for the next month
or so.lite rain do in for Friday, should be a great dry fly day was cloudy skies and light rain,as well as streamer fishing.
Fishing continues to be good, although the wind blew pretty good yesterday, Nymph Fishing was the ticket,Caddis Beadheads,March Brown,Prince Nymph were all working well.Fish were rising most of the day but casting was a nightmare,Iam out this Am will report back later today, very little wind uo here as of now,not going to so bad today, rain for Wed,Good day to come up
Dispite, lots of wind and cold air on mother day, fishing continues to be good to great!, wind is blowing to day as well, more ands more march browns are seen on the River, this should be the week they start, Green and Brown Caddis
are out in force, Watch for the Gray Foxe.Cold air has moved into the Housatonic valley for the next few days, much needed water has come to the river over the last few days, we are holding around 850cfs this is
We only got 1/2" of rain here yesterday, but the must have gotten more up the road as the river has come up over 200 cfs, and is still rising. We really needed the water as the fish were getting concentrated in the center of the river and in the deeper pools. Now they will spread back out. Still very wadeable, and she has not lost any clarity, yet...? Great Barrington shows a increasing spike, so we expect it to come up some more during the morning, but nothing enough to keep anglers away. Great fishing again yesterday, in between the rains and winds. We lost power around 7pm last night, due to the wind which was really howling. It did not come back till about 6 am. It was soooo dark here last night , it seemed like every star in the universe was visible. Caddis - Caddis - Caddis, and a few March Browns. Some 16-18 BWO during the morning rain also. Streamers with white and yellow, and stonefly nymphs, and 16-18 PT doing it too... It really has been a good couple of weeks here, good to see the ol Hous roarin back to life. Just like to old day`s... There is really no reason not to come give it a shot.
Early morning showers and thunderstorms rolled in through the night,so far no measurable amount of water has fallen, last night there was a heavy caddis Hatch that had fish up throughout the River system, March Browns have shown their faces the last couple of nights still very light, I imagine the next week they should really pick up
Brown caddis 16 and 14 have begun, make sure you have green and brown Caddis when you step into the field of battle, Nymph fishing continues to be excellent as well streamer fishing early morning late afternoon and cloudy and overcast days, with these low water levels, this is a great time to explore different spots on the River you can almost walk anywhere except the deepest pools, I don't believe this is going to last much longer as I see Rain is in the forecasted over the next 10 days .
fishing continues to be good to excellent, caddis activity is great in the a.m. starting around seven and going to about noon, then it picks up again for about 4 PM to dark, the good news is more more March Browns reported,I saw a fish eating one at the cover bridge pool two nights ago, gray foxes were seen on the water as well, Brown caddis has also started, caught three fish yesterday morning on the brown size 16, streamer fishing continues to be excellent, with water levels at 550cfs you can walk all over the River, at that water level fish have to rise to flies this would be a great weekend to come out, some scattered showers forecast for Saturday morning clearing out by afternoon, should have no effect on the River, we need water now.
Great fishing continues, with the exception of last night the evening session has been awesome with Spent Caddis,
X Caddis, and Henryvilles, all in size 16 and 14. Last night heavy wind, rain and thunder & lightning came through around five o'clock and was over by 630, picked up about 1/8 of an inch, we could use some water, unfortunately this shut down the River,I was out to about 815 with just a few fish rising. Nemph fishing continues to be good to great, all subsurface CADDIS pattern are working well, Prince nymph, yellow and brown stone are all working well, saw my first March Brown last night on the water we should see in the next seven days this hatch in full swing, also Gray foxes have been noted. Streamer fishing in early morning or on cloudy overcast days has been excellent Woolly Buggers, Olive, Whello . Yes I havehite, black as well as conehead marabou muddlers in natural and in green, little rascals continue to be an overall favorite. Scattered showers on Thursday could make for great dry fly day and for throwing streamers, low water flows make for easy access in the River to almost all but the deepest pools.
Another killer Weekend. Lots of fish up and being taken on top with caddis flies. It is really gonna pop here over the next few weeks as we get into " shmorgasboard " time. The river is in as good of shape as anyone could ever hope for. Very warm again today but mostly cloudy. All I spoke to today have done good, best the river has been in years. Could use a little water, some comming this evening maybe. Get up here a soon as you can to take advantage of the great conditions, and limited angler pressure, light rain overnight we need it, scattered showers throughout the week we need it, this is the time to come to the River to satisfy your dry fly fix tight lines May 2 Flow 692 Temp = 60 Lots of good fishing going on here. Caddis have shown up and the fish are on them both on top and below. Some spinners may linger tonight. Very hot today 80 + air temp. Nymphs and streamers still doing it too. Deer Hair Henryville is working well, as well as the X-caddis and pupae and larvae. Our web host has had some problems in the last 24 hrs, so sorry for the delay on reporting. Everyone ripping lips here today. April 30th Flow 819 cfs

Nuts, Nuts, Nuts. The River couldn't be fishing any better, with forecast warmer temperatures for the next 10 days, this will be the catalyst to launch the Caddis flies, we're seeing more and more of the green body Caddis. More affectionately known as the mother day Caddis, today or tomorrow should set this Hatch into action,be ready , the Hatch starts around 9 AM and goes till dark and beyond, I was flipping rocks yesterday afternoon in the park and their hundreds and hundreds of Caddis pupa under the rocks, they are ready to go. we are about 7 to 10 days away from March Browns and Gray Foxes,March Browns are size 10 and 12, gray fox is size 16,14, with no real rain in sight, this is a excellent flow to fish this hatch, great weekend forecast, it's time to come up and wet a line. Have guides out today, will report on their successes in morning report, tightlines
Fishing continues to be excellent on the River, Stonefly Nymphs, Yellow, Brown and Black, trailing a Caddis pupa size 16 or 14 will bring fish to the net, streamer fishing is red-hot, yellow zuddler's yellow conehead Muddlers, and white conehead Muddlers are deadly right now, more and more Caddis are showing we are less than 10 days away from this prolific Hatch get your 16 and 14 Elk Hare Caddis, as well as x-Caddis,and Henryvilles, in the same size ready for battle. 800 CFS is a perfect flow for wading, with no rain in sight and warmer temperatures coming into New England over the next three or four days River temperature will rise and activate the Caddis this could be the first weekend was good Caddis Hatch.

However I returned to snow last night, what a world we live in just three hours ago I was flying across a turquoise flat in Key Largo, land three hours later back in Connecticut and driving in snow,as for the Housatonic, looks like we picked up a little over an inch of rain, the River has come up to 920 CFS, not the end of the world we need water in the river cool temperatures have dropped the temperature back,a few degrees. last night, and tonight, frost warnings. i'll talk to the guides and get a more accurate report, and get back to you later, 80° temperatures forecast for end of week should put us back to where we belong going into May. See me for costs for the tarpon trips for next year, these are relatively inexpensive trips. Marty is off to Fla. to chase the Silver Kings , a little different game than the one we play here, so good luck..... We got rain here this am, and for the next day I guess. Could get an inch. The ground is pretty dry and we really need it. Keep your fingers crossed that we dont get dumped on. I personally like a day like today over bright sunshine. These fish are low light predators ya know. It
should continue to be real good fishing here. Come up and check it out. April 24,
774 cfs falling, perfect flow for the "Big H"
Temp 58
Vis: good
If you were brave enough yesterday to fish in the wind, and it was windy, they were great rewards to be had, reports of fish we caught from the bottom to the top, streamer fishing was excellent yesterday the best color reported was yellow again, however pictures and tails of a 23 inch rainbow surfaced yesterday afternoon, look like it was as fat as it was around,Nymph fishing continues to be quite consistent and bringing fish to net. Stonefly, Hendersons, Caddis pupa, prince Nymphs, are all working well, the newcomer, started last week and has been very effective is swinging wet flies across pockets and Foam lines,5:30 pm last night, the wind laid down, and the Hendrickson spinners, showed up throughout the River system, as I drove up the River they were bent rods everywhere I looked, I stopped at Sand hole fish were rising from bank to bank, our guides reported fish up in every hole they went through rain coming in on Sunday doesn't look too heavy, could be a great day for streamer fishing. more and more Caddis are being reported, probably about 10 days away and on track for the Mother's Day caddis hatch, scattered showers through Tuesday.Moe will handle the River report after today, I will be Tarpon fishing in Key Largo until Wednesday. Tight lines and good luck, Cross a few Eyes out there.
when I say it's time to stay home and cut the lawn, stay home and cut the lawn, however Friday and Saturday are not one of those days, the Housatonic is on fire right now, fish are being caught in the morning on nymphs, and streamers, black, brown, and golden stones are working great, as well as Hendrickson's, Caddis pupa, Prince nymphs, Hair Ear flash back. Midday report, fish up all over, started around 11:45am
"Come one come all", the 2010 fishing season is definitely under way, reports up and down the river that fish are rising to hatches, have been reported, the fishery is in great shape after last year's epic rain, and lack of pressure on the River. Rainbows have fared well over the winter and are fat and plump and will test your angling skills.
Wednesday depending on where you were in whose report you listen to fishing was good, fishing Hendrickson dries continues to take fish although the Hatch is starting to dwindle, it doesn't mean you can't catch them on Hendrickson's anymore, fish will be looking for them for at least another week, however Hendrickson spinner falls will continue into earlier parts of may . Reports of fish feeding on a size 12 Brown stonefly resonated from the upper river sections, from abutments through lower Elms, light rain coming through early afternoon should have no effect on the River, a beautiful Friday and Saturday on tap, streamer fishing has picked up , some green body, and Brown body caddis have been seen on the shop wall, get ready with lower waters this is awesome Hatch to be here for, with hatches running two weeks early we can start to see these tasty morsels anytime now. Sorry for the no report yesterday, family emergency, the good news, warm weather and falling River flow had the bugs out, and good numbers of fishing rising, reports of fish feeding on top all over the River, received 4 or 5 e-mails with reports of one , to eight fish caught, including a big brown measuring 21 inches ( on top ) a handful of rainbows measured between 14 and 18 inches, a pretty heavy spinner fall came to the table last night, rainbow run, the flats, and the pools behind the campground reported heavy action, I believe the beautiful weather of today made this all possible, 71° was reported, and River temperature climbed almost 5°, I see no reason why tomorrow wont be better than today, light showers and overcast skies, are forecast for tomorrow,by evening we could be near 800 CFS, tight lines
slightly less than a half-inch of rain fell over the last 2 days fish where taking down Hendrickson's dries from about 230pm, spinner falls started around 5:30 PM and fish were on them quickly. Streamer fishing continues to improve daily, report of a 23 inch brown caught on a little rascal streamer echoed up and down the river, it looks like most of the rain is over fishing should be good today with the overcast skies, as the front pull out, Sunday should be the best day of the week at the fish. Tight lines. PS: bought back by popular demand, Moe returns to the fly shop today to help out, welcome back Moe
More and more fish, are being reported caught on top, so I took a ride last night, and I went out to look for myself, I stopped at cover bridge pool, there were at least two dozen fish rising and a couple large Browns out to center going at it pretty good, they were sucking down Hendrickson spinners at that time, I did note, smaller rainbows along the banks taking out Hendrickson dries that were mixed in with the spinners. On my way back home I stopped to look at two car hole, I could see a half dozen fish working there, I never got into the Meadows, but for the traffic leaving after dark, we could ascertain that it must of be pretty good in their if they stay that late. Water levels are about to drop under 900 CFS, remembered at that flow you can walk all over the river, with the exception of the deeper pools. Looks like we will dodge the rain bullet for this weekend, lightly scattered showers Friday and Saturday and the same on Sunday, overcast skies should bring fish to the surface this could be the first good weekend of the season, "be there or be square" the new Orvis Hydrous Rods are in the store now, these rods use the state-of-the-art Helios’s rod blank with not so fancy reel seat, and eyes, for over $200 less savings, purchase a new Rod and Reel and get a free, Generation 3 Wonder line, a $60 savings

For the first time this year I have confirmed reports of fish being caught on Top ,Hendrickson dries, and the spinners, reported from ,push em ups,Rainbow run, Two-car, and the Meadows, scattered showers moving in for the next two days with breaks of Sun, the overcast skies and the water going under thousand CFS should have more and more fish coming to the surface. Streamer fishing continues to get better every day, Yellow seems to be the color of choice right now,Try A Zuddler fished on the swing,to do this you need to fish down River around in front of rocks over pockets, across foam lines, to be successful you need to cover a lot of water, at a thousand CFS,you can walk all over this River.tight lines
Not many people out yesterday, however from about two o'clock to six o'clock the Hendrickson's were in full force, first the Duns, then good numbers of Spinners, the report that I got yesterday were rainbows chasing yellow Zuddler as well as Hendrickson nymphs, stonefly nymphs, in yellow, black, with rubber legs caddis Pupa, I am seeing size 16 Olive caddis in small numbers on the fly shop wall as well as a size 12 Black Stonefly, water levels will fall under 1000 CFS by Saturday this should start bringing fish to the top. five day forecast scattered showers Friday and Saturday ,Sunday supposed to be partly sunny, I don't believe the be enough rain to affect the River as well as the leaves are coming out on the trees will be sucking up that water, Don't little rain keep you from fishing this weekend, the fish prefer to rise on cloudy days, Streamer fishing is best on overcast days. Tightlines
I floated the River yesterday from two o'clock to 5:30 PM my friend Paul landed a nice rainbow on a yellow cone head Zuddlers, Adam who was reminiscing in the back of the boat missed a very aggressive rainbow, stay focused Adam, ha ha, saw plenty of Hendrickson's, on water, still no rising fish, the River should drop under 1200cfs we could be near 1000 CFS by Saturday morning. With cooler temperatures this will slow the Hatch down a little, however fish were reported being caught on stonefly's, Hendrickson nymphs and caddis pupa. Despite rain coming in for weekend it will be light and have no effect on the River. tight lines
